Juan Carlos
King of Spain (1975–), b. Rome. The grandson of Alfonso XIII, he was educated in Switzerland and in Spain. Placed by his father, Don Juan de Borbón, under the care of Francisco Franco as a possible successor, he graduated from Spain's three military academies and received commissions in the army, navy, and air force; he also did graduate work at the Univ. of Madrid and served apprenticeships in many government departments. He married Princess Sophia of Greece in 1962; they have three children. In 1969 he was designated heir to the throne and Franco's successor. After Franco's death in 1975, he became the first Spanish king since his grandfather was deposed in 1931. A popular monarch, he presided over Spain's transition to democracy with intelligence and sensitivity. He has acted decisively to maintain political stability in Spain, as in choosing Adolfo Suárez as premier in 1976, foiling a right-wing military coup in 1981, and handling a scandal involving anti-Basque death squads in the mid-1990s.

Jane Fonda
Born: 21 December 1937
Birthplace: New York, New York
Best Known As: Outspoken Oscar-winning actress and Ted Turner's ex-wife
The daughter of screen legend Henry Fonda (and the sister of actor Peter Fonda), Jane Fonda started in the movies in the early 1960s. In the 1970s she was also famous as an outspoken opponent of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. She made a highly publicized trip to Hanoi, denouncing U.S. soldiers and earning the uncomplimentary nickname "Hanoi Jane" -- a stunt she never lived down. But she was also a movie star, having gone from the sex kitten in 1968's Barbarella to earning a reputation as a serious actress, winning Oscars for her roles in Klute (1971, directed by Alan Pakula) and Coming Home (1978). In the 1980s she suddenly had a new career as the star and producer of exercise videos and books. In 1991 she married media mogul Ted Turner and retired from the movies. They separated in 2000 and Fonda filed for divorce in April of 2001. Her other films include The China Syndrome (1979, with Jack Lemmon), 9 to 5 (1980, with Dolly Parton) and Stanley and Iris (1990, with Robert DeNiro).

Jack Nicholson

Birthplace: Neptune, New Jersey
Best Known As: Jake Gittes in Chinatown
Jack Nicholson has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards, and he's won three times: for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975, from the book by Ken Kesey), for Terms of Endearment (1984), and for As Good As It Gets (1997, with Helen Hunt). His crooked leer and wild-man attitude are famous, but Nicholson is also known as a powerful dramatic actor. He first made a splash as hippie lawyer in Easy Rider (1969, with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper), and three decades later he remains a bankable star in such films as About Schmidt (2002), Anger Management (2003, with Adam Sandler and Something's Gotta Give (2003, with Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves). He has also appeared in Chinatown (1974, opposite Faye Dunaway), A Few Good Men (1992, with Demi Moore and Tom Cruise) and as Jimmy Hoffa in Hoffa (1992).
Nicholson is a prominent fan of the Los Angeles Lakers... One of Nicholson's best-known movie lines -- "Herrrre's Johnny!" -- is from the 1980 film The Shining, directed by Stanley Kubrick from the novel by Stephen King. The line is a reference to the nightly introduction of host Johnny Carson on TV's The Tonight Show.
