Kate Elizabeth Winslet is part of a family of thespians. Her parents are stage actors and maternal grandparents ran the Reading Repertory Theater. She was born on October 5, 1975 in England. At 11 she danced opposite the Honey Monster in commercials. After this she started acting lessons and appeared on stage regularly. Her big break came in 1994 in Heavenly Creatures. In 1995 she attended an audition for Sense and Sensibility and made an impression on Emma Thompson. Her role gave her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She then played in Jude (1996) and as Ophelia in Hamlet (1996).
Winslet's transformation role was in James Cameron's Titanic (1997). She played opposite Leonard DeCaprio which garnered her Best Actress nomination. This made Winslet the youngest actress to receive two Academy Award nominations. Kate uses her own voice in the cute movie, The Holiday (2006). She also has the distinction of being one of the few actresses to be nominated for six Academy Awards.
Winslet is known for being highly mischievous and family devotion. In 1998 she married director Jim Threapleton and they have a daughter. They divorced in 2001 and Winslet married director Sam Mendes in 2003. They have a son. They separated in 2010. Currently Kate is married to Ned Rocknroll and they have one child.
