Born on January 26, 1880, Douglas MacArthur was an Army General who commanded the Southwest Pacific Theater in WWII. He also administered postwar Japan, and lead UN forces during the Korean War. Douglas graduated from West Point in 1903 with high honors. He was an aide and junior engineering officer for ten years and served for four years on the general staff. He was with US troops that occupied Veracruz, Mexico in 1914. 1917 through 1919 Douglas served as chief of staff, divisional commander and brigade commander in France during WWI. H returned to West Point as a member of the teaching staff and served in two commands in the Philippines. In 1918 Douglas received the rank of brigadier general and major general in 1925. Douglas was promoted to general and selected as army chief of staff in 1930. He worked to maintain the armed forces during the Depression, and served as Philippines military advisor and field marshal from 1935 to 1941. He retired from the US Army in 1937. When WWII broke out in 1941, Douglas worked to keep the Japanese out of the Philippines. He was transferred to Australia in 1942 and placed in command of the Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific. He drove the Japanese out of Papua in 1943 and his troops maintained strategic bases in New Guinea. In 1945 (September 2nd) Douglas MacArthur was in charge of the surrender ceremony in Tokyo. Douglas commanded the UN forces in Korea. He was later relieved of command because of insubordination. Douglas was the board chairman of the Remington Rand Corporation in 1952 and generally went into seclusion in New York City. MacArthur died in 1964 in Washington. He left behind his spouse Jean MacArthur, an ex-wife Henrietta MacArthur and one son. Douglas MacArthur received the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Silver Star and many more commendations.
