Reginald Carey Harrison or Sexy Rexy Born on March 5, 1908 in Lancashire England, altered his name to Rex or King for his acting career. He started his acting career at 18 in the Liverpool Rep Theatre. Rex played in the West End in French Without Tears that started him off as a great actor in light comedy. Harrison played the King in Anna and the King of Siam in 1946 and this was his first American film. He was a magnetic persona and had many affairs. His career did not suffer from his philandering.
In 1962 Harrison was offered the role of Prof. Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. He won the Tony for the play and an Oscar for the film. He had extensive vocal training to sing in My Fair Lady, but was unable to sing a single note. The director gave up and told Harrison to just speak the whole song. Harrison played Doctor Dolittle in 1967 and jokes that he was frequently bitten by the animals. He retired from films after The Fifth Musketeer in 1979 but Harrison continued to act on Broadway and in television.
Rex Harrison was bestowed the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 1989 Queen's Birthday Honours List. This was for his services to drama. He was then known as Sir Rex Harrison.
Harrison was married six times. Noel Marjorie Collette Thomas in 1933 ?€“ 1942. They divorced and had one child. Lilli Palmer in 1943 until they divorced in 1947. They had one child. Kay Kendall in 1957 until her death in 1959, Rachel Roberts in 1962 and divorced in 1971. He married Elizabeth Rees in 1971 and they divorced in 1975. He married Mercia Tinker in 1979 and they were together at his death on June 2, 1990.
