Born April 18, 1947 a very talented stage, film and television actor is James Howard Woods. He had his first Golden Globe nomination for The Onion Field in 1979 and went on to star in Once Upon a Time in American, Salvador and Nixon, Ghosts of Mississippi and Shark. He has three Emmy awards for Promise and My Name is Bill W. He has been nominated for an Oscar two times. You can hear Woods in The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Stuart Little 2.
Born in Vernal Utah Woods grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island. He was nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy and received scholarships from Johns Hopkins and Tufts University. He intended to go to medical school. Woods pursued his undergraduate studies a MIT where he majored in political science. He was an active member of the Dramashop where he acted and directed plays. He dropped out of MIT before graduation and became an actor.
Woods played in 36 plays before he made his Broadway debut in Borstal Boy (1970). In 1971 he played in Moonchildren and received a Theatre World Award. As a character actor Woods has been in 130 films and many television series. His first appearance on TV was All the Way Home in 1971 and his first film was The Visitors in 1972. He was a sadistic murderer in the Onion Field in 1979 and a serial killer in Killer: A Journal of Murder in 1994. He has been nominated for an Oscar for Salvador and Ghosts of Mississippi. In 1995 Woods was Lester Diamond in Casino. He was H.R. Haldeman in Nixon.
He is a stanch support of Pres. Bush and the Iraq War and a supporter of Rudy Giuliani. He played Giuliani in Rudy: The Rudy Giuliani Story. He was in An American Carol in 2008 with Kelsey Grammar.
Woods was married to Kathryn Morrison from 1980 until 1983 when they divorced. He married Sarah Owen in 1989 and they divorced in 1990.
