Robert Redford

Charles Robert Redford Jr was born on August 18, 1936 in Santa Monica California. Redford stole hubcaps for fun in high school and lost a college baseball scholarship because he was drunk. He studied acting in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and on September 12, 1958 married his sweetheart Lola Van Wagenen. Redford has four children, three of whom are living and engaged in various avenues in the arts.

Redford's television and stage experience plus his incredible good looks led him to movies and television roles. His most famous role is in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kind with Paul Newman in 1969. He went on to star in The Sting and The Way We Were in 1973. Redford has used his presence to advance environment issues and owns a ski resort and ranch in Utah.
In 1980 Redford founded the Sundance institute for aspirant filmmakers. This yearly film festival is now one of the most significant acting venues in the world.

Redford added directing to his portfolio with his 1980 Ordinary People. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for this film. He directed The Milagro Beanfield War and directed A River Runs through It with Brad Pitt (1992). He won another best director nomination in 1994 for Quiz Show.

Redford's films reflect his political and environment views and he often works with Sydney Pollack. In 1995 Redford was chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the 100 sexiest stars in film history. He is currently married to German painter Sibylle Szaggars.
