Born: 2 October 1904 Birthplace: Berkhampsted, Hertfordshire, England Death: 3 April 1991 Best Known As: Author of The Honorary Consul and The Third Man Name at birth: Henry Graham Greene Graham Greene was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed authors of the 20th century, a British writer whose work had both popular and critical appeal. By his own claim, Greene wrote both "entertainments" and "serious novels," many of them political thrillers. An editor, essayist, playwright and novelist, Greene's most famous works include Brighton Rock (1938), The Quiet American (1955), Our Man in Havana (1958) and The Honorary Consul (1973). He had a long association with the movies, and was involved in This Gun for Hire (1942, with Alan Ladd), The Third Man (1949, starring Orson Welles) and Loser Takes All (1956). Graham's mother was a cousin to British writer Robert Louis Stevenson.
