Winston Churchill

Known as Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill born on November 30, 1874 he was the British Prime Minister during WWII (1940 to 1945). He was appointed as Prime Minister in the period of 1951 to 1955. He is looked upon as greatest war time Prime Ministers of England. He is also a historian, writer and an artist. He was an officer in the British Army and won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is also an honorary citizen of the United States.
He was born into an aristocratic family. He saw action in British India, the Second Boer War and the Sudan. He wrote books about war campaigns and was a war correspondent. Churchill held many political positions. He was President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Home Secretary before WWI. He was a commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front. After the war he was Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for Air and Secretary of State for War. He was also Chancellor the Exchequer n the Baldwin government and returned the pound sterling to the gold standard in 1925. He opposed home rule for India and resisted the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII.
He returned to political office at the outbreak of WWII and appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. After the acquiescence of Neville Chamberlain in May of 1940 Churchill was appointed as Prime Minister. He refused to consider surrender, compromise peace or claim defeat. He was noted for radio broadcasts and speeches which inspired the British people to continue fighting against Nazism. He led Bret Britain as Prime Minister until Nazi Germany was defeated.
In 1945 Churchill was the Leader of the Opposition to the Labor Government. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1951 and retired from public service in 1955. Churchill is regarded as one of the most influential people in British history and ranks well in the opinion polls of people from the United Kingdom.
Churchill was married to Clementine Churchill and they had five children. He attended Harrow School Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.
