Josip Broz Tito

Tito was born on May 7, 1892 and died on May 4, 1980. He was a Yugoslav statesman and leader of the Partisans during WWII. He was presidency of Yugoslavia and considered as an authoritarian. He was almost a benevolent dictator due to economic and diplomatic policies that were highly successful. Tito was viewed as a symbol of unity and his policies maintained the peaceful co-existence of the Yugoslav federations. He worked with Jawaharlal Nehru of India to align countries.
Tito was General Secretary of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia from 1939 until 1980. He led the WWII Yugoslav guerilla movement against the Nazis. He was made president for life in 1953 and held the rank of Marshal of Yugoslavia. Tito defied Soviet hegemony and fought his own road to socialism.
Tito became ill during 1979 and on January 11, 1980 he was admitted to the Medial Centre in Ljubljana with circulation problems. His left leg was amputated and he died of gangrene on May 4, 1980. He was married several times and had numerous affairs. As a prison of war in Russia he married Pelagija Belousova and they had five children but only one survived. In 1940 he married Herta Haas and they had one son. He married Jovanka Broz in 1952 and they had no children.
