Bertrand Russell

Born on May 18, 1972 Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell was a historian and social critic. He can also credit mathematician, logician and philosopher plus British nobleman to his title. He was born to a very prominent family in Great Britain. Russell is the father of analytic philosophy and a premier logician. He penned Principia Mathematica to establish a rational basis for mathematics. Bertrand Russell's essay On Denoting is considered a pattern of philosophy.
In 1894 Russell married Quaker Alys Pearsall Smith. She was highly puritanical, a gradual of Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia, and very high-minded. They divorced in 1921 due to unforeseen differences.
In 1896 Russell published German Social Democracy. This fueled his interest in social and political theory. In 1898 Russell wrote An Essay on the Foundation of Geometry, and in 1903 published The Principles of Mathematics. This writing listed the theory of logicism that stated mathematics and logic are the same. In 1920 Russell travelled to Russia where he me Lenin. In Russell's autobiography he states that Lenin was cruel and and opinionated dictator. He wrote The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism which were about his experiences in Russia.
Russell married Dora Black in 1921. They had three children and to support his family Russell wrote books on physics, ethics and education. He and Dora founded Beacon Hill School in 1927 and Dora continued the school until 1943. Russell and Dora eventually divorced. Russell married Patricia Spence who was his children's governess. They had one son who became a prominent historian.
Russell wrote A History of Western Philosophy in 1945 which became a bestseller. He began an annual series of lectures for the BBC titled Authority and the Individual. He wrote tomes on philosophy and the forward to Words and Things by Ernest Gellner. Russell received the Order of Merit in 1949. In 1952 Russell divorced his third wife and married his fourth wife Edith Find in December 1952. By most accounts this marriage was a happy one. In 1961 Russell was jailed in Brixton Prison after taking part in an anti-nuclear demonstration. He was also a player in the Cuban Missile Crisis and after JFK's assassination he formed a committee to search out who killed Kennedy. He condemned Israel for their aggression in the Middle East and called for Israeli to withdraw in the pre-Six-Day War period. Russell died on February 2, 1970 of influenza at his home in Wales.
