Born April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn New York, Barbara Joan Streisand changed the spelling of her name to Barbra to compliment her acting, director, writing and producing career. Her well known films include Hello, Dolly in 1969, A Star is Born in 1976, Yentl in 1983 and The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. She attended Beis Yakov Jewish School in Brooklyn and is good friends with Neil Diamond. They sang "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" together. Neil and Barbra sang in the same high school choir.
Barbra is a very successful personality in show business she had a brief career as a nightclub singer and an Off-Broadway performer. She debuted on Broadway in 1962 in I Can Get It For You Wholesale. She received a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination and a Drama Critics Poll Award (New York). Her first commercial success was The Barbra Streisand Album a multiple Grammy winner and was Best Album of the Year. In 1964 Barbra started in Funny Girl on Broadway and "People" became Barbra's first single hit.
In 1967 she filmed Funny Girl, delivered son Jason Gould with husband Elliott Gould and gave a free concert in New York. She won an Oscar as Best Actress for her part in Funny Girl and carried on making films. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever in 1970, The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) and What's Up Doc in 1972. She also acted in The Way We Were in 1973 with Robert Redford and the song The Way We Were became one of her greatest hits. Her film A Star is Born in 1976 gave her a Best Actress Golden Globe and second Oscar for the song "Evergreen".
In 1991 Barbra directed The Prince of Tides which is considered the pinnacle of her film career. This picture received seven Oscar Nominations. In 1996 she directed her last picture The Mirror Has Two Faces. In 1997 she married TV actor James Brolin.
Barbra made only two more films Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers in 2010. She published a book Passion for Design in 2010 and then took a much needed rest. She is starred in the 2012 film Guilt Trip with Seth Rogen. Barbra has a huge fan base that encompasses every generation. Her films are constant and search for romantic conceptions where love is everything. Barbra supports many humanitarian causes through her Streisand Foundation. She is an environmentalist, and donated her twenty-four acre estate to the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy. Her trademarks are her own fingernails and her nose.
