Born on January 21 1922 in Garden City, New York, Aristotelis Savalas or Telly Savalas was the son of Greek immigrants. He was a soldier during WWII and after the war worked as a journalist for ABC News. He was always seen as bald-headed and play sadistic or psychotic character roles. He was a TV hero in the 1970s when he played Det. Theo Kojak in the movie Kojak: The Marcus-Nelson Murders in 1973 and the Kojak television series from 1973 to 1978. His trademark sucking on a lollipop during Kojak was designed to help him quit smoking. He catchphrase was ?€?Who loves ya, baby??€? Savalas directed stage plays in Connecticut and was an accomplished poker player. Savalas was the host on Telly?€™s Coffeehouse, a popular radio program that aired in the early 1950s. Savalas hated flying and would take a ship whenever he traveled to Europe. He played a pilot in Capricorn One in 1977, ironically. He was Feto Gomez in Birdman of Alcatrz in 1962 and Cretzer in Alcatraz: The Whole shocking Story in 1980. Savalas was Pontius Pilate in The Greatest Story Ever Told in 1965 and he decided to remain completely bald after this part. Savalas was the executive director of the new special event at ABC. He produced the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports and gave Howard Cosell his first job. Savalas never retired from films and his final pictures were Mind Twister in 1994 and Backfire in 1995. Savalas married Katherine Nicolaides in 1948 and they divorced in 1957. They had one child. Savalas married Marilyn Garner in 1960 and they divorced in1974 leaving two children. He then married Julie Hovland in 9184 until his death on January 22, 1994. They had two children.
