Born November 20, 1956, Bo Derek was initially Mary Cathleen Collins. She is an actress and a producer and known for her part in Tommy Boy in 1995, Fashion House in 2006 and Ghosts Can't Do It in 1989. She is best known for her role in 10 (1979). The film launched Derek's career as a sex symbol. Most of her films are not received well critically but she still makes occasional films and documentary appearances.
At 16 Bo became involved with John Derek who was 30 years her senior. Derek divorced his wife Linda Evans and Bo and John moved to Germany. When Bo was 18 they returned to the US and married. After returning to the US John Derek had Bo bleach her hair blonde and adopt the name Bo Derek. In 1977 she was cast in a small role in Orca (1977). She then appeared in 10, A Change of Seasons (1980) and Tarzan, the Ape Man in 1981. Bo was asked to wear nothing or risqu? costumes in this film to show off her physique. In 1981 Bo Derek won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, but Tarzan went on to make over $35 million in ticket sales.
Bo appeared in Playboy magazine in 1980 and again in 1981. Her film career was non-existent but she did make public appearances as well as magazine covers. In1984 she filmed Bolero which was given an X-rating by the film industry. In 2006 Bo starred in 40 episodes of Fashion House alongside Morgan Fairchild.
Currently Bo raises and rides Andalusian horses. She works for the Animal Welfare Institute's campaign to stop needless horse killing. In 2002 she published an autobiography called Riding Lessons: Everything that Matters in Life I Learned from Horses. She is on the California Horse Racing Board. Bo is also a volunteer chairman for The Veterans Affairs National Rehabilitation Special Events. She does USO tours and is an honorary Green Beret.
Bo and John Derek were married for 22 years. John Derek died from heart failure in 1998. She is now involved with actor John Corbett.
