Greta Garbo

Originally born as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm Sweden on September 1905, Greta Garbo began modeling for a department store at the age of 14. She was in a store short where she was seem by Erik A. Petschler. He cast her in Luffarpetter in1922. Greta applied for a scholarship at a Swedish drama school and appeared in two films En Lyckoriddare in 1921 and Luffarpetter in 1922. She was pulled from drama school and cast in Gosta Berlings Saga in 1924.
Her first film in America was Torrent in 1926. It was a silent film and she did not have to speak English. She played in The Temptress in 1926, Love in 1927 and A Woman of Affairs in1929. She starred in Anna Christie in 1930 which gave her an Academy Award nomination. In1930 she went on to film Romance and in 1931 Susan ZLenox Her Fall and Rise. This lead to Mata Hari in 1931 and Grand Hotel in 1932. Anna Karenina in 1935 was the performance of her life. She starred in Ninotchka in 1939 and two years later she made her last film Two-Faced Woman in 1941. After WWII she never faced a camera again.
She moved to New York City where she jet-setted with Aristotle Onassis. She also spent time gardening flowers and vegetables. She was given a special Oscar for her past performances. On April 15, 1990, Greta died of natural causes in New York. She was 84.
