Roger Vadim

Roger Vladimir Plemiannikov or Roger Vadim was born on January 26, 1928 in Paris, France. Vadim spend his early years in Turkey and Egypt where his father was a diplomat. He was bought up in an intellectually stimulating environment, but after his parents divorced he went to live on his own. He caught the acting bug and his stage debut was at 16. From 1944 to 1947 he studied at Institut d'etudes politiques de Paris at the University of Paris He dropped out to pursue a career in acting and writing. He wrote his first novel, but it was not well received.
In 1950 he saw a picture of Brigitte Bardot and chased her until they married in 1952. Vadim directed Brigitte in And God Created Woman in 1956 which gave Bardot her acting start. They divorced in 1956 before the film was released.
Vadim married Jane Fonda in 1960 who created roles for her in Circle of Love, The Game is Over, and Spirits of the Dead in 1968. He also created the science fiction spoof Barbarella in 1968 which Vadim also wrote. Jane and Vadim divorced in 1970 and they had one daughter. He directed Angie Dickinson in Pretty Maids All in a Row in 1971.
Vadim turned to writing his memoirs and in his autobiography From One Star to the Next he describes his relationships with his wives and mistresses. He had four children, one with Catherine Deneuve. Vadim died of cancer on February 11, 2000.
