Indira Gandhi

On November 19, 1917 in Allahabad India, Indira Gandhi was born. She is part of the politically renowned Nehru family and her father Jawaharlal Nehru was India's original prime minister. She served three terms as prime minister before she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
Indira was an only child and she was known to be very stubborn and highly intelligent. She was educated in Swiss schools and in Oxford. Her political career began in 1960 after he father's death and the deal of her father's successor. She led with a strong hand and fired highest ranking officials. She brought about change in the agricultural program with an eye to improving the poor in India.
She worked with the leader of Pakistan and the Shimla Agreement was signed leading to the creation of Bangladesh. She developed new jobs and ways to grow food for her countrymen. Unfortunately corruption was in her congress and government. In 1977 the Indian legislative section announced she was guilty of a minor violation and requested her resignation. She lost the next election and was imprisoned. In 1980 the country voted again and she won by a landslide.
She attempted to put down a Sikh rebellion and ordered troops to break up their convention. 450 people died. On October 31, 1984 her bodyguard shot her point blank. Another bodyguard filled her body with 30 rounds and she died on the way to hospital.
