Arthur Asher Miller was born in Harlem New York on October 17, 1915. As an American essayist and playwright Miller is honored as a well-known figure in American theater. He penned All My Sons (1947) Death of a Salesman (1949) The Crucible (1953) and A View from a Bridge (1956). He was highly visible from the 1940s to the 1960s when he received a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee and married Marilyn Monroe. Miller worked as a report for the student paper at the University of Michigan. During this period he wrote his first play No Villain. Miller enrolled in a playwriting seminar and worked under Professor Kenneth Rower. In 1938 Miller received a BA in English and joined the Federal Theater Project and was also hired by 20th CenturyFox as a scriptwriter. In 1946 Miller wrote All My Sons which won his first Tony Award and established his career as a playwright. In 1940 Miller married Mary Grace Slattery and they had two children. He left Mary in 1956 and married Marilyn Monroe with whom he had a brief affair. After Miller and Monroe divorced, Miller subsequently married Inge Morath and they had two children. Daughter Rebecca is married to Daniel Day-Lewis. Miller?€™s play After the Fall is a personal view of his experience while married to Monroe. This play was high criticized and a subject of tabloid gossip. Miller wrote Incident at Vichy and in 1968 The Price which turned out to be Miller?€™s most successful play since Death of a Salesman. Miller?€™s career spanned seven decades and he is considered as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. He is also known as the last great practitioner of the American Stage. In 2007 the University of Michigan opened the Arthur Miller Theater and it is the only theater that bears his name. Miller died On February 10, 2005 from cancer, pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He is interred in Roxbury, Connecticut.
