She performed at the Open Air Theatre in Regent?€™s Park in London and then with the Oxford Repertory Company. She was Ellie Dunn in Heartbreak House in 1943. Kerr performed in Belgium, Holland and France with Entertainments National Service Association. This was the British Army?€™s entertainment arm. Her first film appearance was in Major Barbara in 1941. Her next film was Love on the Dole in 1941 and her roles gave her the distinction as a star of the British cinema. She played in England in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp in 1943 and Black Narcissus in 1947. She moved to the U.S. and was in The Hucksters in 1947, Edward, My Son 1949, and Quo Vadis in 1951. Kerr was the infamous star in From Here to Eternity in 1953. She received an Oscar nomination for this film. Kerr went back to stage in Tea and Sympathy and reprised this role in the film version. She was Mrs. Anna in The King and I in 1956 and followed this with Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison in 1957, An Affair to Remember in 1957 and Separate Tables in 1958. Kerr was very good in The Sundowners in 1960 and The Night of the Iguana in 1964. In 1968 Kerr quite making movies since she felt the current movies were violent and too sexy. In 1994 Kerr was given an Honorary Oscar for her screen performances. Kerr married Anthony C Bartley in 1945 and they divorced in 1960. They had two children. She then married Peter Viertel in 1960 until her death in 2007. Kerr died on October 16, 2007 in England.
