In both independent and mainstream movies, Diaz has played hot babes, nice girls (There's Something About Mary, 1998), and even frumpy, neurotic types (Being John Malkovich, 1999). One of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, her films include Charlie's Angels (2000, with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu), Shrek (2001, with Mike Myers), Vanilla Sky (1999, with Tom Cruise) and Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (2002, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis).
Diaz's father is Cuban-American; her mother is a German, English, and native American mix.
