When a significator lies between two malefics (Lilly) or when the last and next aspects it has or will make are to Malefics (Modern) Traditionally a besieged planet is between Mars and Saturn, and in the same sign as them. Bradley James
(1693-1762) English astronomer. Born at Sherborne, Gloucestershire; died at Chalford, Gloucestershire. Friend of Newton and Halley, he was elected to the Royal Society in 1718. He undertook the measurement of the parallax of stars, hoping to supply further support for the Copernican theory. Using a 212-foot telescope, his observations of stars showed small displacements, in the form of an ellipse, during the course of a year. But, the displacements could not be explained on the basis of Parallax. Instead, he had discovered the effect known as Aberration of Light. From his observations, it was possible to determine the ratio of the velocity of the Earth (about the Sun) to the velocity of light, which led to a new method for estimating the velocity of light. (Roemer had first obtained an estimate from the observations of the satellities of Jupiter.) Thus, his work supplied new evidence to support the Copernican view, as light would be subject to no aberration if the Earth were not moving. Parallax of the stars, however, had to await the work of Bessel.

Brahe, Tycho
Danish astrologer and astronomer. (1546-1601) Born at Knudstrup, Scania (south Sweden, then part of Denmark); died at Prague (now in Czechoslovakia). Tycho was the greatest observational astronomer of his day. Given the island of Hven and enormous funds by King Frederick II, he built an observatory on the island and designed instruments which enabled him to observe the heavens with a degree of precision which revolutionized the science of astronomy. Kepler's access to Tycho's observations made possible the discovery of the basic laws of planetary motion. Among Tycho's accomplishments were the discovery of the nova of 1572, the comet of 1577, his detailed observation of planetary positions, and his catalog of exact positions of 777 stars. Tycho was an outrageous and colorful character who lost part of his nose in a duel (over some point in mathematics) and had it replaced with a piece of gold. He died by bursting his bladder by heavy drinking at a banquet. He computed horoscopes for patrons, and maintained a lifelong interest in astrology.
